Second week of August was time of the 15th edition of the best skateboard event and festival of action sports and music– the famous O’Marisquino festival on the Atlantic coast of Spain in the city of Vigo.
City of Vigo is the perfect place for the event and festival with a great crew of people behind the whole event. Again, the organizers showed their good ideas and will to come up with improvements every year. Brand new skatepark was designed and built and a miniramp to it, built by IOU Ramps, was added to programm to meet the needs of the international skateboarders and please the eyes of visitors and supporterts with more action and entertainment.
The event started on Friday with the Pre-Qualification for non-sponsored and local riders to see who will be able to compete with the international and professional riders on Saturday. We have had 6 Heats of 10riders kicking off the show with two 1minute runs for each rider. The score of the better run counted for the ranking and Top20 riders made the cut for Saturday.
There was a lot of new talent . David de la Fuente Tirquero had an amazing and flawless first run with big trick on rails and transitions and the judges were sure that he needs to be in the Saturday’s Qualification. Young talents like Abraham Torres Perez and Mario Arriaran Peral displayed to the crow that they are the future generation of skateboarding and have the talents and passion to push skateboarding further! Marcello Herrero did a great skateboard show with his run that he spiced up with huge drop from the judges stand into the deep voids before landing to the bank under. The crowd really loved it and judges too! Gabi Ferrero was another great rider of Friday’s Pre-Qualification and his run secured him the position for next level of the competition.
Pablo Ibante Perez combined flip trick with rail tricks and made the cut too. Great second run!! Ruben Cebrian had a sick first run with nollie disaster and nollie lipslide to fakie on the rail!! And the Spanish vert skateboarding legend Francisco Juan Barrera Calvo spiced us the Pre-Qualification not only with his presence and support for the young generation but with a sick invert on the biggest transition of the park where balls and experience are much needed to pull it off!
Saturday was the the day when the Top 20 riders of last night clashed with the international riders and Pros coming to Vigo. The list was filled with good names and we have again 6 Heats of 10 riders. The system was the same as on Friday. Two 45second runs with the last trick announcement for each rider! The better run of the two counted for the ranking.
The team of Judges consisted of the legendary skateboarder Pat Duffy from Plan B skateboards, Spanish professional skateboarder Alain Goikotchea from Basque country, Jeremie Grynblat from France, Ivan from Vigo, Spain and myself.
Diego Cano kicked it with flip backside lipslide on the big rail in the first Heat. Ignacio “Nacho” Morata had a well balanced run and proved that he is an experienced rider on both street and transition obstacles. Pedro Machado skated really good too. Bluntslide kickflip out and 5050 grind up the rail were sick!! Pablo Ibante Perez’ve had a great second run with a lot of style and good tricks. He was the first person to kickflip from the platform of the big transition into another tranny bellow. That was amazing and the crowd loved him for it! Pol Catena had some amazing tricks that blew everyone’s mind! His fakie frontside flip to the transition, noseblunt slide and 5050grind backside 180 out were rad and proper!! Christopher Khan had a lot flavor in his runs and big pop for his ollies over the whole grind box and Alejandro Vazquez Comesana did some nice frontside rock’n’rolls and 360flip transfers in his runs. Carlos Neira proved again that he is a well established Spanish rasta skateboarder with much style. His backside tailslide on the big flat rail all over and fs Alley Loops were really stylish!!
As I have mentioned above, this year’s edition of the O’Marisquino event had a brand new wide Miniramp with overVert and bowl section + a mega bang. There were many great riders entering the Miniramp competition and we have had 4 fully packed Heats of riders for it. The system for the competition was that each rider had an introduction run and at the end of the intro runs we have started an organized Jam session. Organized Jam session is a session where a riders skates until he bails and than the next one in order is on. The Jams were 10minutes long to give enough time and space to each rider.
One of our judges – Alain Goikotchea – entered the event in the first Heat and killed it in the bowl and overVert section with a sick frontside Ollie to lipslide, big backside airs and long pivot grinds to fakie transfer from the miniramp section into the bowl side.
George Poole showed some technical wizardry in his runs with backside noseblunt nollie backside out and proper bluntslides along with bigspins to dissasters and other really nice tech tricks. We will see much more from this talented kid in the future! Gorka Larrauri executed a nice Miller flip in the bowl corner and Carlos Valentin showed some serious board control in his lines! It is also very good to see experienced skaters like Ibon Marino killing it with good lines of tricks and proper style!! Ibon showed a wide variety of airs, Inverts, liptricks and coping grinds! Good one, Ibon!!
Semifinals of the Street competition were the next level for the Sunday schedule. We have had the best 20 riders from the past two days all ready in 5 heats of 4 riders. The system for Semifinals was a 45second introduction run for each rider and a 5minute Jam session for each Heat. This way we could give each rider a proper space and also time to show their skills and level of skateboarding.
Brazilian Luiz Neto had a big bag of tricks, including technical masterpieces like 360flip lipslide on the rail, bigspin flip to frontside boardslide or caballerial flip transfer! Really great skateboarding and the world will surely hear about Luiz in the near future!! George Poole proved himself again to be the riders with a magic feet status. Nollie noseslide bigspins out on the big grindbox, nosebluntslides and backside nosebluntslides + some kickflip frontside boardslides on rail were really nice to watch! Gustavo Ribeiro is one of the Ribeiro brothers from Portugal who really can skate! They are the definitely the upcoming generation of ripper from their country! Gustavo had an amazing introduction run with tricks like kickflip indy grab up the rail gap that no one was doing or bigspins to frontside boardslides to fakie on rail. He pulled a long and clean frontside salad grind on the big flat bar as well. Really good, Gustavo!!
Jaime Mateu from Mallorca is a sick bowl rider but with some serious street skills as well. Jaime was ripping on the street course and combined the gnarly bowl tricks with tech. His backside boneless transfer was simply nuts and he pulled a nice long backside tailslide on the big flat rail too.
One of the best runs in the Semifinals was the ones from Joan Galderan Montana. Joan has got it all – gnarly tricks, style and technical tricks all over the park. Ollie transfer to lipslide on rail, big bluntslides and nosebluntslides on Hubba ledge or a 5-0 grind 360flip out on the big grind box! Way to go to the finals, Joan!! Excellent!
Girl skateboarders are big and important part of skateboarding and they have traditionally their contest at the O’Marsquino! This year was no different and we have had some amazing skateboarders from around the globe again in Vigo!
Girls had a introduction run and a free 20minute Jam Session to show their skills to the judges and please the crowd with some good level skateboarding!
Little Catarina Correira was the youngest competitor in the Girls Finals and she was not afraid to skate with the pro Girls all over the park! The crowd rewarded her with a massive applause for that! Asia Lanzi was in Vigo again and since the last year she improved her skateboarding a lot! 5-0 grinds, frontside boardslides and boardslides on rails and nice smithgrind proved it to the judges!!
Candy Jacobs is a great skateboarder and again she showed some really gnarly tricks to all of us! Huge feeble grind on the big flat rail, smith grind and a amazing kickflip to backside 5050 grind on the big grind box secured her the 3rd spot this year! Brazilian two times X-Games champion - Pamela Rosa was killing the course with the mix of rail tricks, technical flip tricks and all over control on all obstacles. Her backside double flip transfer, bigspin transfer, long 5050grind on the big flat rail, crooked grind frontside revert or frontside feeble on the big rail proved that she is one of the best in the world!!
This weekend’s best GIRL skateboarder came from Vienna, Austria and killed it!! Julia Brueckler is a great person and an amazing skateboarder with all types of skateboarding tricks under full control! She was 5050grinding the big flat rail, flipping on the gap, backside 180 up the gap, nollie lipslide on the rail, backside bigspin transfer on the pyramid and added up a huge kickflip from the bank to flat and a proper and clean switch 360flip to fakie at the end. Congratulations on the Champion Status, Julia!!
FINALS and BEST TRICK
Only the Top10 riders from the Semifinals made the cut for the Sunday afternoon finals. They were divided into two heats of 5 riders. Each rider in the Finals had 3runs of 45 seconds. The best run out of the three counted for the overall ranking. It was the best heavy hitters of the whole competition and level of their skateboarding was truly amazing.
First Heat started with Jorge Simoes. His first run was flawless and Jorge performed tricks on all obstacle in the park like huge 360flip over pyramid, frontside nosegrind on the biggest rail and finished up with a crazy frontside 180 to swtich backside 5-0 grind on the Hubba ledge! Brazilian prodigy Marcelo Damazio had a smootch technical run with smooth noseblunt slide on rail, kickflip backside lipslid on the flat rail or a magnificent switch 270 to frontside boardslide on the big rail. Gabriel Riberio, the second of the Riberio brother from Portugal, had a great run with smooth flip tricks to almost every trick he did in his runs like kikflip backside nosegrind on the grind box, kickflip frontside boardslide to fakie and kickflip to backside lipslide on the big rail. Tim Debauche from France is also the future of skateboarding and he proved it during the whole weekend. His runs were consistent and a good mix of tricks of all styles. Beautiful frontside 180 kickflip, nosebluntslides on the grindbox and rail tricks of all kind with ease and finesse. Simply amazing, Tim!!
Second heat was filled with the masters from the Semifinals! Roger Silva had technical tricks on regular, nollie and switch on lock! It is incredible to watch him skate! Switch bluntslides, kickflip crooked grind or switch tailslide 270 out on rail!! Ivan Monteiro from Brazil is the next big thing! Ivan has it all – tech, gnarly, you name it! 360flip noseslide on grind box, backside noseblunts, 360flip lipslides on the big rail or big spin boardslide on rail.
The showdown was left for 3 riders only now! Benjamin Garcia from France was killing it so hard! Backside tailslide shove-it on the big flat rail, backside 360 from the platform to flat, caballerial backside lipslide on rail or frontstide 180 late shove-it transfers! Ben was on fire!! Than came the samurai from Japan – Mr. Ryo Sejiri and his super technical skateboarding!! Switch backside lipslide on the big rail, switch smithgrind or frontside 180 to switch backside 5-0 grind or nollie backside 180 to swich 5050. Ryo showed the mastership of skating switch, nollie and blew everyones mind!!
The last rider of the Finals was Spanish Danny Leon. Danny is an all round ripper and he is not afraid to go fast, high, gnarly or technical. His run was flawless too and he did so many tricks that the crow was just screaming all the time!! Huge stalefish, nollie lipslide on rail, fast plant, invert and the huge blunt frontside out on the biggest transition! Heck yeah, Danny! This was a well deserved win!
Than we have had the Best Trick competition for all riders of the event on all obstacles in the park. Many came close but the all around and the hardest tricks were done by Ivan Monteiro from Brazil. Ivan did many but we have chosen few of his best to show you how good he was. Nollie flip backside lipslide on the big rail, 360flip noseslide bigspin out and the backside 270 to lipslide 270 out on the big rail!! Congratulations, Ivan, you were without a doubt the king of the Best Trick competition!!
After the Street FINALS and for the first time ever at the O’Marisquino event, we have held the Miniramp finals with a live band playing during it. The band was rocking hard and push the motivation of all riders and the atmosphere of the event to another level! 10 best riders from Miniramp Qualification, 2 heats, introduction run for each rider and a 10minutes dead Jam with powerful guitar music performed the girls of the BALA music group!! It was so good! Ibon Marino, Pablo Carranza Exposito, Carlos Valentin, Ignacion Morrata and Benjamin Garcia were the first gnarly Heat. Power and tech, pure!! Everyone was ripping but Benjamin Garcia ruled this Heat with super good lines and the most technical tricks!
Second Heat was filled with experiences professionals like Alain Goikotchea, the new bloods like Luiz Neto and George Poole and the bowl executioners Jaime Mateu and Danny Leon. This was the best show for all people, riders and everyone around! Alain was ripping, Luiz was flipping and spinning his boards to various blunts and George Poole was bluntsliding and backside nosebluntsliding smoothly. Jaime rode the miniramp like a concrete bowl. Backside 360 transfer from the over vert to miniramp section, bonelesses of all kind and proper grinding! Danny Leon dominated the competition here as well. Danny did it all, biggest airs, grinds, bluntslides, kickflip dissasters and kickflip nosobone and indy grabs in the bowl section! Frickin Gnarly, Danny!! Wait for the video from the competition to see it on your own eyes!! You wont believe!!
And that was the best end of the competition we all could wish for!! The Prize Giving ceremony followed and than the live show of the legendary Mix Master Mike from the Beastie Boys!! This was one of the best events in Europe this year and we are looking forward for 2017 edition already!
